Princeton’s Middle Ages for Educators (MAFE) has been awarded a Centennial Grant from the Medieval Academy of America (MAA) for the project, “Medieval OAR Sweet Sixteen Playoffs.” MAA Centennial Grants support the “planning and implementation of local events and projects celebrating and promoting medieval studies in education and the arts in North America.”
The initiative, a bracketed tournament-style competition, will invite medievalists to submit high-quality Open Access Resources about the Middle Ages, and solicit K-12 educator expertise on how to disseminate and create these materials. The project, which was endorsed by the MAA’s K-12 committee, aims to expand MAFE’s content and user base by collaborating with educators and the general public. The grant will fund cash prizes for contributions and travel stipends for semi-finalists to attend a lunchtime roundtable at the MAA 2025 meeting in Boston on creating digital scholarship more generally.
Created in 2020, MAFE is a digital platform designed for teachers, students, and members of the broader public to find resources on the Middle Ages. The site provides short videos from world-renowned experts, introductions to medieval digital projects, and curated links to medieval content.
MAFE’s partners include the Department of Classics, the Committee for the Study of Late Antiquity, the Department of French and Italian, the German Department, the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, the Department of History, The Program in Medieval Studies, and the Humanities Council.
