Introduction to musical culture in Europe during the Middle Ages, 700 to 1400. There will be an extensive playlist, with weekly problem sets whose aim is to foster aural appreciation of the Medieval musical sound world. The connecting historical narrative will be supplied in the lectures, and there will be a course packet containing contemporary texts in translation as well as relevant secondary literature.
