Problems in Ancient History: The Transition from Antiquity to the Middle Ages: Numismatic Evidence

Alan M. Stahl

Back to "Spring 2026" courses

Coin evidence provides a unique view of the transition from the height of the Roman and Parthian Empires in the first centuries CE through the development of distinctly Latin, Byzantine, and Islamic zones by the end of the eighth century. Attention is given to cases where the numismatic evidence varies from that supplied by written, archaeological, and visual sources. Each student follows a region through the period of transition, considering questions of minting and circulation, and produces weekly reports and a final project. The course is open to undergraduate and graduate students; no previous numismatic training is expected.
