An exploration of fourteenth-century Italian song, with emphasis on vernacularism, influences of earlier lyric forms, and literary critical practices of Dante and his contemporaries. Analysis of representative works from the major genres (madrigale, caccia, ballata), and consideration of the individual contributions of Magister Piero, Giovanni da Cascia, Lorenzo Masini, Francesco Landini, and Zacara da Teramo. Participants tackle the thorny historiographical problems posed by the source material, and experiment with new archives for the study of trecento song.
