In recent years, archaeogenetic research has made spectacular progress, and can now address historical periods, for which collaboration with archaeologists and historians becomes essential. The talk will sketch the development and the problems of this new line of research, and present results of the largest project conducted in this field so far: the HistoGenes project, funded by the European Research Council. It has brought new insights about Eastern Central Europe from the 5th to 9th centuries, a period with numerous recorded migrations and political upheavals.

Reception to follow.
