The lecture addresses the dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in the ‘Migration Period’ in the transitional phase from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. It looks at the relationship between perceptions of barbarians and the ways in which they were treated, and on modern scholarly and political uses of the period.
